It is my firm belief that experience based learning programs, directed at science and technology, are an effective means to fill the lagging pipeline of college graduates in the engineering, math, science and technology fields. My 12 years of involvement in FIRST has borne this out. I have seen many students who were not interested in engineering turn to this field in their college studies as a result of their experience in FIRST. I am a working software engineer in Silicon Valley, and have spent the past 12 years working with a FIRST team in San Jose. As a result of my experience with these teams, I decided help the WRRF make this type of learning experience available to more students in the San Francisco Bay Area and the state. I'm sure that by working together, we can nurture and grow experience-based learning programs that will benefit both education and industry, and the community at large. I am looking forward to working with you to further this goal.

Today, changing demographics, an aging workforce, and a globally competitive market necessitate increasing the number of underrepresented groups in the STEM workforce. However, economic inequality and educational barriers prevent BIPOC girls and women from being exposed to and educated in the essential disciplines of the modern-day economy. We created the K-12 Youth Initiative program to address these pressing issues and help young BIPOC students capitalize on this opportunity.

Featuring our immersive, hands-on after-school educational program, a tour of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and our SparkHart Hackathon, our K-12 Youth Initiative is advancing the success of students of color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and preparing them for the future workforce.

Curriculum Resource
Goodgirls Write Code programs are offered in public and private schools nationwide, incorporated in the teacher's curriculum, as an after-school club, or summer camp throughout the school year. We bridge the gap that exists in computer science programs offered in public schools by providing Goodgirls Write Code resource toolkits. Each toolkit includes teacher and student instructional materials, as well as Goodgirls Write Code t-shirts used as rewards to encourage each student to achieve project goals and motivate them to succeed.

“FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills.

Kids often come in not knowing what to expect – of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence and with a sense that they can create their own future.”

How Contact Discovered
Mathematics is often the reason that students leave STEM, particularly girls and some students of color. We aim to change this by communicating the sources of maths inequality in the US and by teaching the classroom methods that are needed for 21st century learning. By providing research-based teaching methods, mathematics tasks, videos, and ideas we intend to significantly reduce maths failure and inequality in the United States and beyond, inspiring teachers and empowering all students to success.
